    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” Black & White glossy new photo reproduction of a 1943 MACK Model FCSW Mining Truck rated at 100,000-Lbs GVW operated by Columbia Iron Mining Co., Cedar City, UT, loading under a large Electric BUCYRUS-ERIE Shovel.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This MACK FCSW Mining Truck, produced in the 1940s, is loading under a large BUCYRUS-ERIE Electric Shovel, perhaps a 120-B. The early FCSW Macks had full width cabs, but from 1942 on they had this style offset cab shown in this photo. The FCSW’s of the 1940s had a very heavy bogie assemble with a double set of heavy springs on each side. From the looks of the single exhaust, this truck was most likely diesel powered with by a Cummins HBD 6-cylinder 672-cid diesel. While the date of this photo is not known, a similar photo dated October 1943 appeared in the
Iconografix Mack FCSW 1936-1947 Photo Archive
    book.
MACK MODEL FC & FCSW: The single axle chain driven FC was first produced in 1936, designed for off-highway use with a GVW rating of 60,000 Lbs. Only 22 units were built, since the heavier duty FCSW was more fitting to customers needs. The larger FCSW was a chain driven, tandem axle truck also designed for off-highway use. It had a GVW rating of 100,000 Lbs., with a wheelbase of 170.5” and overall width at the rear tires of 124”. Large gasoline engines from Mack, Waukesha, & Hercules were offered, as well as the Cummins HBD diesel. While most FCSW Macks were used in American Mine Operations, somw were sold to Mexico, Great Britain, and Asia. A total of 251 FCSWs were produced between 1937 and 1947.
COLUMBIA IRON MINING CO. of Cedar City, UT mined iron ore in Iron County, UT, 250 miles south of Salt Lake City in the SW corner of the state. Iron Ore was first discovered in 1849. The Ironton Blast Furnace of Columbia Steel Corporation (purchased by U. S. Steel in 1930) began commercial scale mining in 1923-24 as the railroad was completed. Columbia Steel was the first to successfully use coke made from Utah coal. Much of the recoverable iron ore has been recovered, while greater reserves of high grade ore remain at deeper levels. The Ironton plant ran from 1924 to 1966, producing only pig iron which supplied blast furnaces in California. After U. S. Steel’s roll ended in 1985, a series of various owners operated in the area. Due to falling iron ore prices, the Iron Mountain Project was shut down in 2014.
