    Description

This photo is an excellent fine quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy professionally reproduced photo of a 1940s STERLING Diesel Road Tractor Fleet #8 owned by DAKOTA TRANSFER & STORAGE CO. of Minneapolis, MN, paired with a nice looking FRUEHAUF Stainless Steel semi-trailer with an engine-driven reefer unit mounted on the front.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This diesel-powered STERLING looks fairly new with a 1945 Minnesota license plate. Most likely it is an HC Model powered with a 6-cylinder 672-cid 150-hp Cummins Diesel with shaft-drive, and sanders (as shown in other photos). In this photo, Fleet #8 is pulling a nice-looking FRUEHAUF Stainless Steel Tandem Axle semi-trailer with a front-mounted reefer unit. Sterling produced 341 trucks in 1940 and 400 in 1941, halting civilian production in March 1942, except for a limited number of new trucks allowed under civilian quotas. Perhaps Dakota was lucky enough to qualify for a limited number of new Sterlings, until normal production resumed in 1946. My original vintage photo was taken by the late Joe Wanchura from Muncie, IN, who as a truck driver himself, took many photos of trucks that he saw around the country. From the number of Dakota semis that he photographed, they must have been one of his favorite truck lines.
DAKOTA TRANSFER & STORAGE CO: Little is known of this company, other than they were based in Minneapolis, MN in the 1940s, ran a lot of diesel powered Sterlings, and used both dry freight and reefer trailers. Joe Wanchura took a lot of photos of various Dakota tractor-trailers.
If you have any information on this company, I’d appreciate hearing from you. Thanks!
STERLING MOTORS produced heavy duty trucks in Milwaukee from 1916-1952. Know primarily for staying with chain driven trucks much longer than any other producer,  these particular Dakota trucks had 4x2 worm gear enclosed final drives. While highway Sterlings were popular on the west coast, most Sterlings in the later years were custom built for off-highway severe-service use. Sterling was purchased by The White Motor Company in 1951, and rebadged as Sterling-Whites. Milwaukee production moved to Cleveland in 1953. With White’s acquisition of Autocar in 1953, and with Sterling-White only producing 250 trucks in 1952, White terminated Sterling-White production in 1953.
