    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white photo new reproduction of a WESTERN TRUCK LINES 1940s STERLING Tandem Freight Truck pulling a 6-Wheel Trailer. Western Truck Lines became Western Gillette, Inc. in 1956.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION:  This Sterling is set up in a typical west coast configuration, tandem truck pulling a 3-axle full-trailer. Date of the photo is unknown, but could be a pre-WWII 1940 Sterling or a postwar 1946-1948 … styling did not change during this period. This photo has a white border on all 4 sides.
WESTERN TRUCK LINES: Western Truck Lines was in the dry freight business. Dick Cantlay and Joe Tanzola who had been in the dump truck business since 1920, sold out to Consolidated Rock Co. and went into the tanker business. In 1936/37 Cantlay & Tanzola bought Western Truck Lines. As very progressive truckers, they were among the first in the nation to use diesel engines, as well as many other mechanical and technical advancements in equipment, maintenance, and truck operations. In 1956 they purchased Gillette Motor Transportation and changed the name of the company to Western Gillette, Inc. By 1965 Western Gillette was ranked as the 20th largest motor carrier in the nation. Like many other major carriers, Western Gillette ran into a cash flow problem in the mid-1970s, and was ultimately sold to Roadway Express in 1976.
I received fascinating information in early 2015 from a former Western driver whose father drove for Western from 1938-1977. He himself started working for Western at age 13, then became a driver and drove until 1977 when Cantlay sold out. Thank you Dennis!!!
STERLING-WHITE: Sterling-White did make a light weight “Transport Model” primarily for the west coast where they had a strong dealership organization. This truck was diesel powered, usually by a 6-cylinder 743-ci 200-HP Cummins NHB600.
Sterling Motors produced heavy duty trucks in Milwaukee from 1916-1952. Know primarily for staying with chain driven trucks much longer than any other producer,  this particular truck has a 6x4 dual worm gear enclosed final drive. While highway Sterlings were popular on the west coast, most Sterlings in the later years were custom built for off-highway severe-service use. Sterling was purchased by The White Motor Company in 1951, and rebadged as Sterling-Whites. Milwaukee production moved to Cleveland in 1953. With White’s acquisition of Autocar in 1953, and with Sterling-White only producing 250 trucks in 1952, White terminated Sterling-White production in 1953.
