Description
This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a 1948-1951 STERLING Model HB2503D Chain-Drive Tractor & Lowboy Trailer loaded with a MARION SHOVEL. BERNARDO BROS, INC. were contractors from Boston, MA.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This STERLING HB2503D Chain-Drive Tractor used the “126” Series Cab introduced in 1948 and used until early 1951 as a Sterling, and into 1953 as a Sterling-White. The two-piece fixed windshield was the most distinctive feature of the “126” cab, replacing the two-piece ventilating windshield of many years. The cab was still built of wood and metal construction with metal reinforcements, heavy-gauge fenders, hood and roof. The model designation stands for: “H” means Heavy Duty, “B” indicated a conventional with a set-back front axle, the first 3 numbers “250” multiplied by 200 meant a GVW of 50,000 lbs, the final number meant the number of wheels, and the “D” indicated diesel power.
The tandem-axle lowboy with its high arch gooseneck, is similar to the ROGERS design (but could also be a Schertzer made in Massachusetts), is loaded with a MARION Shovel in the 3/4 TO 1-CY size. This photo has a white border on all 4 sides.
STERLING HISTORY: STERLING began as the STERNBERG Motor Truck Co. in Milwaukee in 1907, but because of anti-German sentiments at the beginning of WWI, the name was changed to STERLING in 1916. Sterling was an early user of Cummins Diesels in 1932. Sterlings were generally a premium heavy-duty truck built for severe service, and were very popular on the West Coast and in the New England states where their dealer network was the strongest. One popular sales feature of the Sterling was the Oak Insert in the Frame Rails, meant to take heavy impacts and heavy loads. Sterling continued chain drive longer than most other U.S. truck manufacturers, the last HB2002D being built in 1952 as a Sterling-White. In June 1951 Sterling was bought by White Motor Company, and the name was changed to Sterling-White. In 1953 all Milwaukee operations were moved to the White plant in Cleveland. The last mass-produced Sterling-Whites were in 1954. Approximately 12,000 Sterlings were produced over their 50 year lifetime. The Sterling trucks of Milwaukee had no connection what-so-ever with the renamed Ford that Freightliner/Daimler-Benz tried to market as Sterling from 1997 to 2009.
