    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a 1970s BROCKWAY 300 Series Conventional Single-Axle tractor pulling a lowboy trailer owned by contractor JAMES D. MORRISSEY, INC. of Philadelphia.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: I believe this Brockway to be an early 1970s, perhaps a late 1960s Series 300 Brockway. The 300 Series was introduced in the mid-1960s, with the new 3-piece curved corner windshield, the newly styled Brockway grille, and the Mack-inspired “Husky” on the hood sides and nose. With diamond-plate fenders, this may have been a heavy-duty model built for construction. In this photo, the Brockway is hooked to a lowboy trailer loaded with what looks to be ballast tanks of some kind. In the background is a crane boom of some sort, lettered with the James D. Morrissey name.
JAMES D. MORRISSEY INC.: James D. Morrissey, Sr. started his construction company in 1918 doing excavation for homes. 1920 marked his first mechanical quarry stripping. By 1948 they had completed their first major highway construction project, which led to major expressway and turnpike projects with mass excavation. In 1967 the company was the first in Pennsylvania to use slip form concrete paving. Large highway and airport projects continued through the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and into the 21st Century. Still family owned and operated in 2016, the company also performs construction management, operates Eureka Stone Quarry and Asphalt, as well as JDM  Materials Ready Mixed Concrete.
BROCKWAY 300 SERIES: An undated original vintage Brockway 300 Series 4-page illustrated brochure that I have for the 358TL and 359TL, which were similar in appearance to the single axle Brockway in this photo, stated the 300 Series “started with “3 basic Principles: 1-Short BBC; 2-Continuity of Design; and 3-Engine Accessibility.” Some of the “Extra Margin” features include: Improved Cooling System; Back Mounted Radiator Shutter; Complete Range of Engines from 6 in-line gasoline or V-6/V-8 diesel; High Quality Ride and Handling; Quality Electrical System; Vibration Compensating Design; and the Exclusive Brockway cab.
BROCKWAY: Veteran New York carriage builder George Brockway built his first motor truck in 1912 as a high wheel delivery wagon. By 1914 Brockway was building conventional trucks with 4-cylinder Continental engines, a company that would remain their primary engine supplier into the 1960s when diesels became more  prominent. By the late 1920s Brockway had become one of the nations largest independent truck manufacturers. In 1928 Brockway bought the Indiana Truck Corp. of Marion, IN to expand into the midwest. However by 1932 the Depression caused Brockway to sell the Indiana line. Brockway was heavy into military production in both WWI and WWII. In 1956 Brockway became a division of Mack Truck, and soon became the ‘Husky’ line. New designs in the 1960s often used Mack cabs. Despite a proud following of Brockway owners, after two years of financial loses, Mack closed the operation in 1977 after a wild cat strike complicated an orderly sale of the Brockway operation.
