    Description

Antique Davis & Kidder's Electric Machine for Nervous Diseases
.  Quack device which dates back to the mid to late 1800s in heavy wooden case.  About 4.5" X 4.5" X 10".  Device appears to be complete.  As constructed, there is an opening for a lock to secure the hinged lid.  The key is missing, although the lid is unlocked.  Activation crank is a separate piece as constructed, and the crank is included.  Turning the crank operates the device, which activates an electromagnet inside the case to transmit a "healthy" electrical shock to the operator through a pair of wires connected to the sides of the case.  The "patient" holds a pair of metal cylinders to receive the shock.
I don't know whether or not this device is fully working because only one of the metal cylinders is present.  However, the mechanical operation seems to be functional, because turning the crank spins the large, round wheels inside the case which presumably generates the shock by activating the electromagnet.  Without the other metal cylinder, it may be impossible to test the device to see whether the shock is being generated.  Opening bid reflects the fact that only one cylinder is present
, although device comes with an extra length of wire and any metal item which conducts electricity can be substituted for the missing cylinder.  Small nail-like piece of metal pulls out of the left side of the case to activate the magnet after the crank is used to move the mechanism inside the case.  Case is in good shape for its age, although there are a few small dings and scratches on the outside of the case.
