DESCRIPTION: This is one of two 3850-B Stripping Shovels built by Bucyrus-Erie for Peabody Coal Co. The 3850-B Shovels were the largest ever built by B-E. I believe this to be the first one built, named the “BIG HOG”, for use at Peabody’s Sinclair Mine in Muhlenberg County in Western Kentucky. It’s color scheme was green and creme. It carried a 210’ dipper stick, with a 115-CY dipper bucket, and operated on a 460’ radius. The “Big Hog” removed approximately 100,000-cy of overburden daily. It weighed 18-million lbs., with a boom that towered 250’ above the ground - 90‘ taller than the Statue of Liberty. As with most large Stripping Shovels, it rests on 4 sets of twin-crawlers. To get an idea of the size of this machine, notice the pickup truck parked at its base, and look for the operator wearing a white T-shirt standing in the operators compartment. It was built in 1962 and operated until 1985, at which time it dug it’s own grave and was buried. Many parts were salvaged to use as spare parts for its sister 3850-B, the “River Queen” in Illinois. Peabody ordered this machine for one purpose, to supply the 3 massive coal hungry power units at the TVA Paradise Fossil Plant.
SISTER STRIPPING SHOVEL “THE RIVER QUEEN”: Peabody’s second 3850-B started work at the River King Mine in Illinois in 1964, swinging a 140-CY dipper. It weighed 18,700,000-lbs. The “River King” worked until 1993 when it was scrapped, digging its way through nearly 20 miles of Illinois coal fields.
