Description
This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction side view of a ca. 1933 heavy duty WHITE Series 600 Tractor-Trailer Logging Truck loading a huge log in California in 1934.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
This is Photo #1 of 3, with the print made from an original White Trucks negative. All 3 photos are of the same truck hauling the same huge log, in different poses as it was being loaded and driven out of the woods.
DESCRIPTION: This heavy duty WHITE SERIES 600 tractor with its logging trailer is being loaded in the northern California timber country, with what may have been a large Douglas Fir log, bound for the mill. Notice the heavy tong hooks and cables lowering this huge log onto the trailer. This side view of the White illustrates its long hood for its gasoline engine and its massive size for that age. Built as a heavy duty single axle tractor, a tandem tag axle was added for additional capacity. The ‘logging truck’ was still in its early years, and still developing into the heavy duty, rugged logging trucks we have today. This was before the invention of the heavy steel headache rack to protect the cab … this operator had mounted a light cab protector of sorts behind the cab. Long before the days of air conditioning, the hinged windshield is open for air ventilation and added driver comfort. This White has one small round rear-view mirror on the drivers side, but no mirror on the passenger side. Also note the absence of cab marker lights and turn signals. In photo #2 of this series, a 1934 California license plate can be seen mounted on the front bumper.
WHITE SERIES 600: The new heavy-duty family of the 620-640 Series was introduced in the early 1930s. The 600 Series had GVW ratings up to 16 tons, new auxiliary transmissions, double reduction drive, and full air brakes. Long nose hoods with big gasoline engines made the Series 600 popular with truckers needing more power and strength. In 1934 the Series 600 received new styling, along with the introduction of the Series 700 with it’s vee radiator. Still climbing out of The Great Depression, White sales rose from a low 1,384 to close to 4000 in 1934.
