    Description

This photo is an outstanding 8x10 new reproduction black & white glossy photo of an early 1950s WHITE WC-22T Tractor and Semi-Trailer owned by THE KROGER COMPANY posed in front of what appears to be a 1950-era Kroger warehouse, perhaps in INDIANAPOLIS, IN. Note the brick streets and the street car tracks.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: Kroger always operated a large fleet of White trucks, ordering the WC-22 tractors into 1962. This WHITE WC-22T is pulling a short single axle semi-trailer, typical of the early 1950s. This “Super Power” White would have been gasoline powered. This 8x10 photo is borderless.
An interesting opinion was given to me by an eBay friend & customer. He believes this photo was taken from Dorman St. in Indianapolis, IN, of a building that fronted on 1011 E. St. Clair St. Obviously a lot of time has passed since the photo was taken, and it looks like the current building has been through some changes. Viewing the current street view taken June 2014, the architecture of the building is very similar, and the ornate crest seen in the Kroger photo can been seen at the top of the current building on the E. St. Clair St. side. The railroad tracks seen in the Kroger photo were most likely spur tracks running off the main line railroad not far from this location. Also the ‘Sommers’ name seen on the Kroger billboard, was a prominent Indianapolis family involved in many Indianapolis businesses at the time the Kroger photo would have been taken. Check out this address at Google Maps street view and see what you think!
WHITE WC SERIES: The White WC Series was introduced in 1947 and produced into the 1960s. The WC Series was sometimes called “the truck that made the White Motor Co.” The WC Series was the last of the stylish cabs designed by the Russian Count Alexis De Sakhnoffsky in 1936. The WC-22 may have been the most popular of the WC Series during this period, before the Interstate Highway System was started, short trailers were still the norm, and gross weights were still relatively low, long before the shift to diesel power. The narrow WC cab was pretty spartan, with bench-type seat, simple dash gauges, and two-stick transmission or 2-speed rear axles …  a cramped cab with not much room for a big man. Small round rearview mirrors were standard, and turn signals still an option.
THE KROGER COMPANY: Founded by Bernard Kroger in 1883 in Cincinnati, has grown to operate markets in 31 states. In the 1930s Kroger was the first grocery chain to have a store surrounded on all 4 sides by parking lots. Now the country’s largest supermarket chain, the second largest general retailer, and the 5th largest retailer in the world. As of 2013 Kroger operated over 2,400 stores, still maintaining headquarters in Cincinnati. According to Google in early 2014, Kroger had 343,000 employees, and 2013 sales of .7 billion.
