DESCRIPTION: While the Commercial License Plate reads Maryland 1932, I believe this ‘AC’ Mack to be much older, between mid-1917 and 1923, after Mack changed to vertical hood louvers, but still had the side-mounted mesh radiator screen before changing to the adjustable vertical louvres on the cowl by 1923. In this photo the ‘AC’ Mack is dumping its load. As the vertical hydraulic cylinder was raised, the cable on the sheave system attached to a sturdy steel casting attached to both front frame rails on the dump body, raised the dump body in 10 to 15 seconds. This ‘AC’ Mack is fitted with a windshield ‘frame’ made of canvas snapped to the cowl, and has been upgraded to electric headlights. These ‘AC’ Bulldog Macks were good ‘mud’ trucks and well suited for construction work. Eventually hard rubber tires were ‘outlawed’ as being too tough on pavements, and replaced with pneumatic tires which were far more forgiving on city pavements.
WOOD DETROIT HYDRAULIC HOIST & BODY CO.: Wood-Detroit was the pioneer in Hydraulic Hoists, developed and built by Gar Wood. Simple and efficient, having but 3 moving parts -a piston and 2 steel pump gears - all working in oil. This vertical hoist was preferred by many users, particularly for compact, heavy loads. The hoist mounted vertically back of the drivers seat, and was powered by a power-take-off from the truck transmission.
GARFIELD A. WOOD: While working in St. Paul, MN, he got an idea to mechanically dump a coal body, and spent his life savings of 0 to produce a working prototype, patenting his hydraulic dump in 1912. Soon after that he moved to Detroit and founded the Wood Detroit Hydraulic Hoist & Body Co. His real ‘love’ however was speed boats and power boat racing. Known as the ‘Gray Fox of Algonac’, the town in Michigan where he built his swift power crafts, he was one of the immortals of motor boat racing, holding the international motor-boat racing speed record from 1932 to 1937. Gar Wood by investing in a small polished cylinder began an intensive career struggling with the first hydraulic lift for dump trucks, building that investment into a million personal fortune. Gar Wood also financed the Chris-Craft Boat manufacturing company, and expanded his industrial holdings into a vast network of nationwide factories and assembly plants. Gar Wood died in 1971 at the age of 90.
HISTORY OF THE ‘AC’ MACK: The famous Mack Model ‘AC’ was the truck that made Mack famous around the world, and was known as the “Bulldog” Mack for its rugged dependability in WWI Europe ... a nickname that stuck and gave rise to the phrase “Tough as a Mack truck”. Some 40,200 ‘AC’ Macks were produced from 1916 to 1938, one of the longest production runs of any model truck. Built with a 4-cylinder gas engine and 3 or 4-speed transmissions with chain-drive, the ‘AC’ was well suited for city work and rugged construction jobs. The ‘AC’ also had an all-steel cab with an optional metal roof, the first American trucks so equipped. The doors slid up and down in ‘pocket’ sidetracks. The split side-radiator behind the engine, allowed for a sloping hood design and better driver visibility … not a new idea on today’s trucks. A ‘motometer’ usually sat atop the center of the rear mounted radiator, for the driver to monitor engine temperature, manually opening and closing the side vents on the radiator to cool or warm the engine. Some of these rugged chain drive ‘AC’ Macks were used up well into the 1950s … long past the average truck’s retirement age ... hard to believe today!
