This photo is an outstanding and interesting high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of an early circa 1921 ‘AB’ MACK and 2 ‘AC’ MACK TEXACO Tank Trucks at a TEXACO/THE TEXAS COMPANY Bulk Plant/Tank Farm.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: My vintage photo has “1921 Connecticut” written on the back … that era fits with the hard rubber tires on all 3 chain-drive trucks. The 3 drivers and their supervisor proudly pose in front of 2 ‘AC’ Mack Tankers on the left, and an ‘AB’ Mack Tanker on the right, at a large TEXACO/THE TEXAS COMPANY Bulk Plant/Tank Farm with 5 large elevated tanks in the background.
THE TEXAS COMPANY/TEXACO: TEXACO was founded in Beaumont, TX as the Texas Fuel Company in 1901 with the discovery of oil at Spindletop, but soon moved to Houston. Its logo with the red or white star goes back to the lone star of Texas. By 1928 Texaco had become the first U. S. oil company to sell its gasoline nationwide under one single brand name in 48 states, and later in all 50 states. Texaco was an independent company until its refining operations merged into Chevron Corp. in 2001, when most of their station franchises were divested into Shell Oil Co.
AB MACKS: Originally introduced in 1914, the AB, known as the “Baby Mack” saw constant improvement into 1936 when it was finally discontinued. In its 22 year production span, Mack produced a total of 51,613 Model AB’s, substantial testimony for its customer satisfaction and loyalty. Originally the AB was powered with a Mack 4-cylinder 60-horsepower gasoline engine with chain drive, hard rubber tires and a brass radiator. It was one of the first American trucks built with an all-steel cab and metal roof. Over the years a dual reduction rear axle with pneumatic tires was introduced.
HISTORY OF THE ‘AC’ MACK: The famous Mack Model ‘AC’ was the truck that made Mack famous around the world, and was known as the “Bulldog” Mack for its rugged dependability in WWI Europe ... a nickname that stuck and gave rise to the phrase “Tough as a Mack truck”. Some 40,200 ‘AC’ Macks were produced from 1916 to 1938, one of the longest production runs of any model truck. Built with a 4-cylinder gas engine and 3 or 4-speed transmissions with chain-drive, the ‘AC’ was well suited for city work and tough jobs. The ‘AC’ also had an all-steel cab with an optional metal roof, along with the ‘AB’, was among the first American trucks so equipped. The doors slid up and down in ‘pocket’ sidetracks. The split side-radiator behind the engine, allowed for a sloping hood design and better driver visibility … not a new idea on today’s trucks. A ‘motometer’ usually sat atop the center of the rear mounted radiator, for the driver to monitor engine temperature, manually opening and closing the side vents on the radiator to cool or warm the engine. Some of these rugged chain drive ‘AC’ Macks were used up well into the 1950s … long past the average truck’s retirement age ... hard to believe today!
