    Description

Cutlass  from the Hispanic Arabic al-janyar, "the dagger",  designates a sword with a broad and curved blade, with an edge on one side (or buttress in its last third) used in the Iberian Peninsula, part of the Mediterranean and Italy during the Middle Ages and up to the Renaissance.  In old vulgar Spanish it was also known as "tertiated".
There are several forms that were given in times past to these cutlasses, of which there was abundant Toledo production during the Arab invasion. A sample of these Moorish cutlasses is in the Museum of the Army of Madrid.
Its main characteristics, the guard that rises towards the fist on one side falling on the other towards the blade, and the widening and curvature of its blade. There are many literary references to the Arab cutlass. Already in the work Don Quixote de la Mancha by Cervantes The cutlass is defined with adjectives such as:
"... gruesome and sharp cutlass ... he took out of the scabbard a wide and inordinate cutlass ... he had a Moorish cutlass that pierced his chest ... "
It remains in this stylized Moorish cutlass of our production, remembering that Toledo, also during its Arab times, was a very important center of the sword shop.
    "...
    .to not lose everything,
    uncovered from the sheath
    certain moldy metal
    of tizona and of casting;
    .
    And warn do not say
    cutlass
    ,
    because if cutlass named
    without saying the Damascene,
    the
    cutlasses
    they will get angry "
(Ref. Complete Works-Salvador Jacinto Polo de Medina-Fable of Pan and Siringa)
In Cervantes's Don Quixote it is stated:
"-« You are the one who needs it », answered the manchego, and opened the battle with such an excessive cut, that if the weapon were a
    cutlass
, there will be Portuguese for the bone "
"... And give thanks to God Sancho, that since they crossed you with a stick, they did not make you the per signum crucis, with a
    cutlass
    "
