HISTORY OF NAVAJO FREIGHT LINES: Navajo began as Red Arrow Transportation in Wichita, KS, in 1934, but changed the name to Kansas City-Los Angeles Flyer Transport. In 1940 the company was purchased by Mitchell B. Howe, who changed the name to Navajo Freight Lines. He commissioned a sign painter to do a portrait of a Navajo Indian for his office. When the painting was done, it was discovered the artist had painted in blue eyes such as no full-blooded Indian has ever had. Instead of changing the color of the eyes, Howe felt the blue-eyed Indian got more attention, and Navajo became known as the “Route of the Blue-Eyed Indian”. In 1953, D. L. Cohen, who had already built Denver-Chicago Trucking into a transcontinental carrier, purchased control of Navajo. Through a series of acquisitions he created the nation’s third largest transcontinental carrier. The acquisition of General Expressways in 1960 with their Chicago to New York authority was the final link. In 1964 David Ratner acquired control of the company and continued to grow to over 5,000 pieces of road equipment operating 67 terminals in 33 states. In 1979, Navajo became part of the Arkansas Best Freight System.
