DESCRIPTION: This Sterling is set up in a typical west coast configuration, tandem truck pulling a 3-axle full-trailer. The truck freight box has a side door. Date of the photo is unknown, but is a postwar 1946-1948 … styling did not change during this period. The truck and trailer advertise service to California, Arizona, Oregon, & Washington. I believe this particular photo came from the late Fred J. Perkins collection, well-known New England truck enthusiast. This photo has a white border on all 4 sides.
WEST COAST FAST FREIGHT INC.: Started as a partnership in June 1944 by two friends, one still in the service and the other running the company, they bought Colletti Fast Freight. With 7 rundown rigs and terminals in Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle, they started growing. The Sterling in this photo was most likely one of their newest purchases after WWII, when civilian trucks became available. By 1955 the West Coast fleet had grown to 1,400 units hauling dry freight, furniture, mail, and petroleum products in a variety of truck makes. At that time, P.I.E. had a vision to buy a company that covered the west coast and Northwest area. West Coast Fast Freight was their answer, and P.I.E. purchased them in 1954, with I.C.C. approval in 1956. At that time West Coast had a road fleet of 562 tractors and 1,029 trailers.
STERLING-WHITE: Sterling introduced their light weight “Transport Model” RWS160H in 1946 primarily for the west coast where they had a strong dealership organization. This truck was diesel powered with a 6-cylinder 672-ci 150-HP Cummins HB600 and 4-wheel worm drive. A popular sales feature was the rugged Sterling frame, with oak timber pressed into the frame rails.
Sterling Motors produced heavy duty trucks in Milwaukee from 1916-1952. Know primarily for staying with chain driven trucks much longer than any other producer, this particular truck has a 6x4 dual worm gear enclosed final drive. While highway Sterlings were popular on the west coast, most Sterlings in the later years were custom built for off-highway severe-service use. Sterling was purchased by The White Motor Company in 1951, and rebadged as Sterling-Whites. Milwaukee production moved to Cleveland in 1953. With White’s acquisition of Autocar in 1953, and with Sterling-White only producing 250 trucks in 1952, White terminated Sterling-White production in 1953.
