    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction with a lot of detail of a 1938-39 STUDEBAKER “Metro’ C.O.E. Tractor pulling a tandem-axle Car Hauler loaded with 4 new 1939 STUDEBAKER CHAMPION Automobiles for CHAPMAN MOTOR CO., the Studebaker Distributor in Jacksonville, FL.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: In 1936 Studebaker introduced their new “Metro” C.O.E. Series in both the Ace or Boss Models. This short wheelbase model was offered in 1-1/2 ton and up trucks/tractors, with the “M” suffix  on the model number (such as K-20M which was the 2-3 ton model). The 1938-1940 models had a simple horizontal bar grill as shown in this photo. New 6-cylinder Hercules engines replaced most of the Waukeshas used in earlier years. The brief ‘streamliner’ era of truck design was in response to the demand in the mid to late 1930s for an aerodynamically and streamlined truck. Notice even the streamlined styling of the trailer. This photo has a white border on all 4-sides.
STUDEBAKER CHAMPIONS: The sign over the dealership door reads: “New Studebaker Champion”. The Champion was produced from the beginning of the 1939 model year until 1958. The success of the Champion in 1939 was imperative to Studebaker’s survival following weak sales during the 1938 model year. For its size, it was one of the lightest cars of its era. It’s straight-6 engine outlasted the model itself and was produced until the end of the 1964 model year. The Champion was one of Studebaker’s best selling models because of its low price, durable engine, and styling. The car’s ponton styling was authorized by industrial designer Raymond Loewy. The Champions won many Mobilgas economy runs. Deluxe models came with arm rests and dual wipers. It’s 164-cid I6 engine produced 78 horsepower, and in 1940 claimed 27.25 mpg.
HISTORY OF STUDEBAKER:  The Studebaker Bros. of South Bend, Indiana, began building horse-drawn wagons in 1852, experimenting with horseless vehicles as early as 1897.  By 1902 Studebaker was building trucks, and continued building trucks until 1964.
