The archaeological site of Sutton Hoo, located in the English region of East Anglia, includes numerous burial mounds. The most famous of these is the burial of the ship from which precious and well-preserved artifacts dating from the early 7th century were excavated in 1939. The probably best-known finds of this tomb (believed to be the last resting place of King Rudwald of East Anglia) are the famous Great Golden Buckle and the Helmet of Sutton Hoo, both significant testimonies of the quality of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship.
The beautiful one-handed sword offered here is modeled on a sword, or, more strictly speaking, on the fragments of a sword grip finely crafted with golden hat knob inlaid with garnets, which was unearthed from the same burial chamber. The surviving components of the prestige weapon are on display for people to admire at the British Museum in London.
The blade of this beautifully detailed Sutton Hoo sword reconstruction is a classic Germanic leaf from the Middle Ages (wide, straight, double-edged). It is made of EN45 spring steel and has a wider one that runs almost its entire length on both sides. Parallel edges are not sharp.
Like the original artifact, the richly decorated handle is made of several riveted parts. The handle is composed of a core of wood bound in leather and adorned with clips or supports of aged brass. The composite knob bar and protection have the same three-part design consisting of a layer of intermediate wood between two brass plates. The knob lid, made of brass and red enamel, faithfully reproduces the intricate pattern of the museum piece.
This early medieval one-handed sword comes complete with a wooden and brown leather sheath with wooden suspension loop (maximum belt width 5 cm) and aged brass collar and chape.
Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation. In addition to its quality as a collection object, it also fits perfectly as an accessory, p. E.g. to complete your costume.
