Description
VTG Royal Copenhagen Bertel Thorvaldse "Four Seasons" Set of 4 Porcelain PlaquesFeaturing Neoclassic allegorical themes, this set of four (4) white bisque (biscuit) porcelain plaques has incredible sharp definition and detail. Each plaque represents one of the seasons -- Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. Look closely at the photos to see what is included in each scene. Note: the photo with all four plaques were taken in different light. The bright white if the other photos is the actual white/color/brilliance.
Often sold singly (or in a somewhat dated frame), its rare to find the complete set of four in such excellent shape and just the plaques/no frames. Very neoclassical yet mid-century modern in feel, I think these would be a stunning statement on a dark painted or wallpapered wall -- think entryway, end of a hallway, or in a dramatic powder room.
Originally designed by Bertel Thorvaldse in the early 19th century, Royal Copenhagen produced this series again in the mid-1950's in pure white bisque / biscuit porcelain with a matte surface. The detail is exquisite! There are already holes drilled thru the back and up through the top, threaded with clear fishline so once they are hung, appear to be floating against the wall.
The condition is excellent as I can see no chips cracks, flea bites, repairs, or mars. No oily stains from fingerprints either. Just a little bit of soil on the backside - probably from the wall or shelf which could be washed off with warm water, soft cloth, and mild soap -- I'll let you do the honors. No visible soil on the front. Unfortunately, the original box and any story cards/brochures are long gone.
Each piece is marked on the back with the Royal Copenhagen maker's mark (name, crown, Denmark) and the three blue wavy lines. Each piece also has an imprint -- i'm assuming indicating style/manufacturer's number. Several have a paper tag, probably an original price sticker. 5-1/2" in diameter x 3/8" thick
I am suggesting additional insurance based on final price paid (USPS only covers up to 0).
