    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of the YALE TRANSPORT CORP. 1950s WHITE WC-22 ROAD TRACTOR-TRAILER BILLBOARD that stood for years in New York City. When it was built in 1954 it was the WORLD’S LARGEST BILLBOARD.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: A friend told me this Billboard using an oversize WHITE WC-22 Road Tractor & STRICK Freight Trailer was located at the Yale Terminal at 40th St. and 12th Ave. in New York City. When it was built in 1954 it was the World’s Largest Billboard. I also was told that it was torn down around 2007.
From what I have read, Yale went on the build one of the world’s largest privately owned trucking terminals in 1964, a 4-story building on New York’s West Side Highway. At that time Yale used a 4-times life size Mack as their spectacular sign atop the building.
HISTORY OF THE YALE SYSTEM, New York, NY: As a result of offering overnight delivery for Philadelphia merchants from New York suppliers, in 1938 Benjamin Eskow formed Yale Transport Corporation, Nationwide Packing Company, and American Freight Forwarding Co. By 1963 the Yale System grew to over 2,000 employees, 1300 vehicles, and 26 terminals offering service in CT, DE, MD, MA, NH, NJ, NY, PA and RI along with Washington, DC. Yale became exclusive agents for Air Cargo (17 of the world’s major airlines serving the NYC area) with service to both Idlewild and La Guardia airports. Yale also joined forces with the Southern Railway System and 4 southern trucking firms to offer “piggy-backed” service, and then offered similar service to several other major railroads. With things seeming going their way, Yale abruptly filed for bankruptcy and reorganization in 1965. Again in financial trouble in 1972, Yale worked their way through Chapter X bankruptcy, until 1979 when they filed for their 3rd bankruptcy … this time not recovering. Another grand old name in U. S. motor carrier history during the “Golden Years of Trucking”, was  gone from the highways but not from our memories.
